Unified Communications

Unified communications (or UC) is a current trend in business designed to simplify and integrate different forms of modern communication systems. It is delivered using both hardware and software and often requires an infrastructure upgrade.

Unified Communications technology is being developed to help break down the barriers between the different communication devices and formats that are in use today, so that people can communicate with anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Unified Communications encapsulates:

Real-time communications systems focus on fundamental communication between individuals using applications or systems such as audio conferencing, instant messaging, traditional PBX, next-generation (VoIP communication systems) and paging.

Unified messaging which has been specifically devloped to help improve on voice-mail, e-mail and fax based media.

Multimedia aplications, unified communications includes messages from mixed media types such as video, sound clips, and still images including communication via the now widely used short message services (SMS).

Collaboration with specific emphasis on applications such as calendaring, scheduling, workflow, integrated voice response (IVR), and other enterprise applications that help individuals and groups communicate with greater efficiently.

Transactional and informational systems which provide access to e-commerce, voice Web-browsing, weather, stock-information, and other enterprise based applications.

Unified Messaging (or UM) integrates of different streams of communication (e-mail, SMS, Fax, voice, video, etc.) into a single, or, unified 'messaging store', accessible from many different devices. Unified messaging is a subset of a fully integrated Unified communications system.

Microsoft & HP continue to grow their Alliance in Unified Communications

Microsoft & HP have recently announced a 4 year strategic global initiative which is set to deliver a complete unified communications and collaboration based solution.

In the annoucment both companies were likely to invest a further $180 million in R&D, professional services and marketing. The project is geared towards helping business to reduce costs and boost productivity with UC technology.

The combined unified communications solution will incorporate hardware, software, networking and services to help make a reduction in travel, it and telecom running costs. This wil be delivered by streamling comms with messaging, voice and video applications.

The market demand for unified communications is rapidly expanding. Forrester research, an independent analyst company recently released a report showing that 84% of business in North America and Europe are either in the evaulation, pilot or actually implementing unfied communications solutions with the market forcast set to expand another 35% towards 2015.
