40 Gigabit Ethernet – What To Know About 40 Gigabit Ethernet Technology

In mid 2006, a non-profit organization of nearly 400,000 electronics professionals coming from around 150 different countries started a proposition to start publishing 40 Gigabit Ethernet technology.

Carrying the title of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), this group of experts were praised to be the brain behind the superior networking standards of Ethernet that we now know. With their already widely-used networking services, this organization upholds the name of IEEE or The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

The 10GbE is still the fastest Ethernet technology that we are using for data transfers in the present.

The IEEE’s proposal was to exceed this technology’s rate of 10 gigabytes (10,000,000,000 bytes) every second with 4 up until 10x the speed. And since the project poses nothing but positive effects, it was approved and, with the help of a special task force, was formally set in motion.

A label of 802.3ba, following the original 802.3, was given to the project. And its main objective was to release speeds faster than the 10GbE technology, specifically in 40 and 100GbE.

There are two speed rates, as to be able to cater to both small sever needs like home offices (40GbE) and large server demands like that of the internet (100GbE).

However, the 40 gigabit Ethernet should not be mixed up with the known 40gbE solution that works by putting together four 10GbE.

The latest 40GbE will be molded into just one individual form, like a 10GbE network technology with wider capabilities.

Having been en route for almost three years now, the project has definitely been productive. As a matter of fact, starting October 2008, the task force already exhibited nine successful draft versions.

With a promise following the same 802.3 interface of the 10GbE, the task force was notable for their accomplishing effort.

And because of their core similarities, the 40 gigabit Ethernet technology levels with the 10GbE for in terms of flexibility with various physical layer standards.

By the help of certain modules, the 40GbE can be used to link devices even with varying distances.

It was said that sometime in June 2010, the 40GbE will be formally published. However, because there are existing versions with limited modules, some electronics companies are already performing tests and restricted sales starting September 2009. But, because of availability of module-limited draft versions, a few electronics and communications groups are already conducting tests and sales.

Considering all the promising factors from this project, both 40GbE and 100GbE will surely mark a new advancement in our ways of data exchange.

If the default 10GbE has already made a blast with its superb speedy performance, it is certainly to be expected that the 40 Gigabit Ethernet technology will blow the minds of a lot more people.
